The Long Barn Books 2007 competition for a novel TO BE PUBLISHED IN 2008 is now open.

IMPORTANT If you have submitted your first novel to other publishers at the same time as entering it for the competition you must state this. If you have ANY OTHER novel out on offer to other publishers please also state this as if this novel is accepted it will of course mean you are no longer a first novelist and eligible for entry with us.

Do look at the blog. I update daily and sometimes more than that. There are sections for STUDENTS - each set book has its own sub-section. If you register, you can comment on the items up there.

I am running an ongoing course about Virginia Woolf and her novels,( by request ) called WOOLF FOR DUMMIES. Do please feel free to join in if you are interested, if you love VW or if you have always found her difficult to understand. I am to convert you !

There is daily news of Susan`s COUNTRY LIFE, her on-going writing, past books and general books and reading - and sometimes publishing - comment.

The blog gets around 500 visitors a day. The more the better.

ESSENTIAL READING FOR STUDENTS

PENGUIN editions of I'M THE KING OF THE CASTLE and STRANGE MEETING have an Afterword by Susan which you should read BEFORE e-mailing your question to her.

Also, SUSAN HILL. THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE by Margaret Reynolds and Jonatha Noakes (Vintage £6.99) has an interview with Susan and answers a lot of questions.

Susan does NOT receive any form of royalty from sales of this book but it is very useful and highly recommended.

In September, 2006 LONG BARN LEARNING will publish the only authorised guides to I'M THE KING OF THE CASTLE and STRANGE MEETING, with THE WOMAN IN BLACK to follow.

I am perfectly willing to accept reasoned criticism and even messages telling me one of my books has not been enjoyed - I have written 35 books and the author of this e-mail does not actually say which one they have been reading but I assume it is I'M THE KING OF THE CASTLE, which is most often set for GCSE -but whoever wrote this should be slighly ashamed of themselves. THE WOMAN IN BLACK VIDEO/DVD

Please do note.. if you are trying to track down Video or DVD copies of the old (1988) Television adaptation of this novel. The film and TV rights are now wholly owned by someone else and this TV version will not be shown again or re-issued. Meanwhile, pirate copies are sometimes for sale on ebay and amazon. THESE ARE ILLEGAL and should not be purchased.

I'M THE KING OF THE CASTLE has been optioned for a feature film by a top independent Director and a screen writer is in place. The book is also to be a stage play later this year, with an adaptation by Helen Slavin.
