The prize now known as the Man Booker was not awarded in 1970 but now a competition to find the lost winner has been launched by Man Booker and Susan's novel I`M THE KING OF THE CASTLE, published in that year, has been longlisted for the prize, among 21 others many of whose authors are no longer alive.

The short list will be chosen by a panel of 3 in March and the eventual winner chosen by public vote at the Man Booker website. If I`M THE KING OF THE CASTLE is shortlisted and you would like to vote for it to win - especially if you absolutely loved it as your GCSE set book ! - there will be a link here.

The competition is keen. Susan was telephoned by two journalists yesterday and asked which book ought to win - i.e. which she thinks is the best novel of 1970. 'Troubles, by J.G. Farrell,' she said without hesitation. 'It is a masterpiece. Jim Farrell died a tragic early death. If he had lived he would have surely been our greatest living novelist many times over.'
