Latest News
June 2005
All the students who log into the website for advice about GCSE, AS
and A Levels in English and Drama, have now done their exams. That side
of the Board will be almost totally silent now, until the autumn. I hope
everyone got the Grades they were hoping for and deserved and meanwhile,
can enjoy the rest of the summer.
A note for any stray students who do [pass through … do please
check this site carefully to see if there are answers here to the questions
you send me by e-mail and do remember, I CANNOT DO YOUR COURSE WORK,
let alone your exams, FOR YOU !! Nor can I/would I write your essays – not
even for ready money.
Those who want help about I`M THE KING OF THE CASTLE and THE WOMAN IN BLACK
will find most of it in the useful book SUSAN HILL.THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE by Margaret
Reynolds and Jonathan Noakes.. Vintage Paperback 6.99 .. and No, I do not get
any money at all out of sales of this.
THE CRIME NOVELS
Both the paperback of THE VARIOUS HAUNTS OF MEN and the hardback of
the second in the series, THE PURE IN HEART are apparently selling very
well and the first has now reprinted twice.
There have been some excellent reviews. Today, THE SPECTATOR has a very [perceptive
one by Kate Chisholm, and The Daily Mail was very flattering about THE VARIOUS
HAUNTS.
Susan was interviewed about the books on WOMAN`S HOUR last week and
the interview can be heard on-line by logging into bbc.co.uk/womanshour and
doing a search from there.
A full page interview with Susan in THE DAILY TELEGRAPH (ARTS AND BOOKS
SECTION) appeared on Saturday June 18th
FESTIVALS
Susan will be appearing at the ILKLEY FESTIVAL OF LITERATURE in October,
date tbc, and at HONITON LIBRARY on DECEMBER 8th.
NEW FEATURE
Starting next week, I will be recommending a book per week on this website.
It may be a novel, or not, and will always be a book in print and almost certainly
in paperback but not necessarily brand new – though sometimes it will
be hot off the press.
Book Groups and other avid readers may like to tune in and the book will be
available to buy via amazon.co.uk via a link on the site.
HELP AND SUGGESTIONS WANTED PLEASE
Now for something else..
I have almost finished writing the third volume in my crime novel series, THE
RISK OF DARKNESS..
Each title is a quotation.. THE VARIOUS HAUNTS OF MEN comes from a poem by
George Crabbe, THE PURE IN HEART from the New Testament, and THE RISK OF DARKNESS
from an essay by Rowan Williams, the present ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY.
So far I have not found a title for the next.. or indeed, for any after that.
It has to be in keeping with the first three, so needs to be a quotation and
to be in the formula of The …..in/of/at …. You get the idea. I
would be really grateful for some suggestions. You do not need to know anything
about the book – I often choose my titles in advance ! Only that it has
to be suitable for a crime novel rather than, say, a children`s picture book
or a light romance..
I won`t promise to use any or all of the suggestions.. on the other hand, I
well might !
Thanks
